Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Here is what you Need to know About Our Class

Year One is such an exciting year, full of great trips, workshops and hands on lessons! Yes, we work hard to build those early foundations of learning and to establish that all-important enthusiasm for lifelong learning and discovery! There are still plenty of new experiences to be had as the work gets more complicated, and we begin the path to Key Stage 1 SATs.
This year, children will learn to count forwards and backwards up to 100. They will know their addition and subtraction facts to 20. They will start to learn about times tables through the use of simple multiplication and division problems, for which they will be given objects to help them work out what is being asked. They will find half and a quarter of a shape or quantity and measure using standard units, as well as tell the time to the hour and half-hour. They will also learn to name some common 2D and 3D shapes.
In English, we will consolidate learning of phonics and soon become confident in matching each group of letters with the sound it makes. We will begin to read a wide range of stories and listen to poems which we will start to recite by heart.
In Science, we will investigate Plants, Animals including humans (identifying and naming a range of animals and understanding how and why they are grouped), Everyday materials and Seasonal changes (observing changes across the four seasons and looking at different types of weather across the world, including Nigeria).
